Shortcodes are incredibly useful. They allow you to do complicated things with short, uncomplicated code. But there is one thing that can make them misbehave: line breaks between shortcodes. Continue reading “Line Breaks in Shortcodes”

Text in Images
In the last week, I have encountered two situations where an Augsburg web page had been put together using nothing but images. The pages had text content, but the text was part of images. I’ve seen instances of this before, but not as severe as what I saw in these two pages. So I decided it was time to address this. Continue reading “Text in Images”
WordPress Update: 3.8 “Parker”
WordPress 3.8 has been released. This is my first time writing about a WordPress update, so just so you know, this sort of update is nothing new or rare–they happen every two or three months. This one you will notice, so I wanted to make you aware. Continue reading “WordPress Update: 3.8 “Parker””
Content Manager Training 11-21-2013
Thanks to everyone who attended one of the training sessions. The information from the training is below, along with some notes.
Handout and Slideshow
Training Handout for 11-21-2013 (Google Doc)
Training Presentation for 11-21-2013 (Google Presentation)
Notes
- Rather than offering two identical training sessions in the future, I’m considering offering “Basic” and “Advanced” sessions to better meet the needs of the spectrum of content managers we have.
- Someone suggested the idea of open work sessions, where anyone could come work on their site. I would be there to answer questions and offer assistance but it would not be a formal training time. We’ll try this in lieu of a regular training session for December.
Infobar and Infobox
Infobar
You can put an infobar on your page using this shortcode:

link=”x” contains the URL it will link to, and the text=”x” contains the text that will display in your infobar. Continue reading “Infobar and Infobox”

Managing Documents (Web Folders)
Update: March 2020. While the information below is still accurate, your department may prefer to use Google Drive. It’s best to share from a Google Drive account owned by your department (rather than through an individual’s Google account), and Google Shared Drive is ideal for this. Talk to your LFC about Google Shared Drive, and how to to get one set up.
Here’s a video explaining how to do this. Watching in full-screen mode is recommended; might be difficult to see what’s going on otherwise. Text explanation is below the video.
The www.augsburg.ac website, as well as inside.augsburg.ac WordPress sites, do not allow you to upload any files except images. If you want to link to documents on your website, here’s how you should do it. Continue reading “Managing Documents (Web Folders)”
